In 2007 Grafisch Atelier Den Bosch made the exhibition ‘Buiten het boekje’ (Outside the booklet), in which the work of six illustrators was in the spotlight. Often the desire has been expressed to follow up on this. Now, 11 years later, we ask exclusive attention again to six illustrators with Het sprekende beeld, whose work ranges from very subtle line art to humorous brightly colored images.
In addition to the editorial illustration work by Anna van Dooren, there are the book illustrations by Esther Sepers and the atmospheric narrative images of ML Wasiela. The refined illustrations by Pepijn van den Nieuwendijk (Cirque de Pepin) go more towards an autonomous image in which the narrative character still prevails. Counterpart in line form the work of Atelier Tenk (Kenny Jacobs and Tom van der Pijl) with graphically clear ink drawings. Finally, the striking humoristic images of Geoffrey van Dijk, a burst of color and a feast for the eyes.
The exhibition aims to be a sampling of what is happening among young illustrators. Visible is also the tension between the applied and useful illustration as guidance or supplement to the written word and the freedom to create an individual visual language within it. In addition, the autonomous work in which the illustrative idiom is used to come to its own world of ideas; a world in which stories are told exuberantly.
In this exhibition many illustrators meet each other, in which their works start a dialogue, then converse with each other in a multifaceted way about what is possible within the illustrative. The visitor is passionately taken in here.
Come and listen to what the images show you, come and see what these illustrations are about!
