De reis van de Drakenkeizer/The journey of the Dragon Emperor
Galerie Van Slagmaat presents from 15 June to 18 August 2018 ‘De reis van de Drakenkeizer’/’The journey of the Dragon Emperor’.
In this overview exhibition you can see ceramics, paintings and drawings by ‘Cirque de Pepin’, the alias of Pepijn van den Nieuwendijk (1970 Waddinxveen, KABK The Hague).
Pepijn grew up in Woerden and was already involved with archeology as a child. As an adolescent he collected many fragments of ceramics during excavations in the center of this historic fortified town. Encouraged by his drawing teacher in high school, Pepijn chose the art academy instead of archeology.
As a visual artist, Pepijn bases a lot of his work on history and old stories. His love for fairy tales and mythology can also be clearly seen.
When Pepijn got the chance to work with ceramics, he was inspired by the old shards collection. During exchange trips to the porcelain city of Jingdezhen in China he came into contact with the ancient blue and white Chinese porcelain. This became a new fascinating source of inspiration for ceramic sculptures and drawings.
Pepijn is not limited to white and blue in terms of color, especially his paintings are colorful. You recognize his wondrous figures at a glance.
Perhaps you even know the four brightly colored wall reliefs ‘Dream of the Future’ that he made for the municipality of Woerden for Waterrijk.
The exhibition will be officially opened on Saturday 16 June 2018 at 3:30 pm in the presence of Pepijn by the brand new alderman for Culture in Woerden, Mr George Becht.
You are very welcome.
