This ceramic sculpture ‘La incapacidad de Verdugo’ I specially made for the exhibition ‘Tussen Kunst en Geschiedenis’ (Between Art and History). Artists were ask to make a work of art inspired by objects from the city museum of the historical city of Coevorden, The Netherlands. ‘La incapacidad de Verdugo’ or ‘Verdugo’s inability’ (to take the city of Coevorden) shows a Spanish soldier figure with the head of a goose as a reference to Coevorden. He stands at the fortified town of Coevorden. The work is based on Francisco Verdugo, Spanish military commander in the Dutch Revolt, born in 1537 in Talavera de la Reina, province of Toledo, died in Luxembourg, 1595). It is the dream victory of Verdugo, or perhaps his nightmare, he did not die that long after he failed to take the city of Coevorden, perhaps his inability became too much for him?
